During the day it's an excellent kid-friendly dining option and after work it's perfect for having a few beers and winding down. What to do at night is up to you, believe me when I say The Whale has seen it all. Bigly! Bring cash if you're only buying drinks.

Codfish cake. Delicious. Big cake, onion rings, fries, coleslaw and tartar sauce. Always a pleasure earing at the whale. Best place to eat downtown in Newburyport

Within the limited set of economical eateries in downtown Newburyport lives The Thirsty Whale Pub and its menu of superior food. Hint: Get the Haddock Platter and turn it into a smashing Fish & Chippie. The new chef is a scrappy Irishman and I think he's got something to prove. His dishes arrive with a belt of freshness and he's definitely punching up in this city nearly dominated by much spendier venues.

Very nice place awesome bartender makes you feel like it's your own neighborhood bar

We visited the restaurant part of the Thirsty Whale for lunch and really enjoyed it. The food tasted nice (we both had burgers - attached picture is the Bronco Billy Burger), was plentiful and cheap. The service was good as well, so all in all a fine experience

This place is an institution and a serviceable casual bar where you can get a pint and some pub fare. The recent renovations definitely makes the place feel less divey (which everyone has mixed feelings about), but there's no denying there's now more space and everything is a bit more put together.

While it owns a historical repute as the local dive the new team has kept the best elements of that atmosphere and completely modernized the dining area. Above the bar is a new ducting system, new furnishings have been installed, stairs have been torn down, and there's talk of even more improvements on the way. The difference to me is stunning after being away for some time. The bar has well over a dozen spots which can become valuable real estate during afternoon and evening hours so keep in mind beers move butts. If there are sports worth watching they will be on the TVs, and if the house audio isn't playing a Pats or Playoff game, or there's no live music after dining hours the jukebox has a huge digital and online collection.
